The risks of Cyber Monday

By Stephanie Brown

Jacksonville, FL —

First shoppers hit the chains for Black Friday, then some local stores for Small Business Saturday.

Now, millions are expected to hit the keyboard and shop deals during Cyber Monday.

But the bargains you think you are getting could come at a cost to you, if you are not careful about where you are shopping.

“The World Wide Net has a worldwide criminal element,” says Jacksonville’s Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent in Charge Dominic Pape.

Pape says one of the most obvious concerns is entering you credit card information online. He says you should stick with stores you have shopped with before, or ones that are well known. If you choose to pursue a seemingly good deal from a site you have never heard from before, do some research before putting in your information.

“They can steal your identity and, of course, ring up a Christmas bill that you don’t need,” he says.

One of the growing concerns deals not just with the vendor, but the shipment itself.Pape says there is a significant problem with people not receiving the items they think they’re ordering.

“You think you might be in a “Brand A” type of purse, items and things like that- and then what shows up is actually counterfeited,” Pape says.

He says just because a deal looks good on paper, doesn’t mean you can guarantee the end result if you shop on an unfamiliar site.In many cases, these counterfeit shipments come from overseas and, in that situation, Pape says you would likely not be able to get any money back.He says you can try filing a police report, but other countries have different laws and some just aren’t concerned with counterfeit purses and goods.

Pape says this is one case where is pays to be picky.

“Be very sensitive, take a look, double check, because you don’t know who you’re gunna be dealing with on the World Wide Web.”

While he encourages you to shop and enjoy the holiday, that feeling will only come without the regret of a stolen identity later.
