The Navy sailor who was shot in the abdomen two weeks ago is still in critical condition, but his brother says he’s a lot healthier after undergoing multiple surgeries.
Brett Parks, 33, was shot in the parking lot of the Colony of Deerwood Apartment Complex near the Town Center. His brother, Derek, says he was trying to help someone who was being robbed.
“He’s a good, good man. And that is evident because he wanted to help somebody that was in trouble,” Derek said.
Doctors in the intensive care unit at Shands Hospital had to remove a kidney and a large part of his colon. Two days ago they had to amputate his right leg below the knee because blood flow had been cut off for a long period of time.
“God has chosen to honor our prayers and kept him hangin’ in there,” Derek said.
Derek says Brett is “much, much, much” better than two weeks ago and “much healthier although still sick and critical.”
While he isn’t on duty in the Navy, Brett is a personal trainer. Derek says he was at the apartment complex that day to train people.
“He’s a man of faith. He loves the Lord. He loves his family. He loves his country, and that’s why he joined the military,” Derek said.
“God has been so good in working through this.”
Brett Parks is a husband and father of a 16-month-old boy with a daughter on the way.
Police have the suspected shooter in custody.
