A former Duval county teacher charged with sexually molesting a minor made his first court apperance Monday without a lawyer.

Cuffed and in a green prison jumpsuit, 26-year-old Christopher Bacca said next to nothing, only raising his head to softly answer Judge Virginia Norton’s questions about his legal representation.  The whole hearing lasted about five minutes.  At one point, the court was told that Bacca thought the teachers’ union would be providing him with representation. However, since he is suspended without pay from his job at Windy Hill Elementary School, he wouldn't be able to afford one and was declared insolvent.

Bacca was assigned to the public defender’s office and is scheduled to be in court again August 15th.  Judge Norton acknowledged that the court was teaching judicial college that day and as a result may not be available for Bacca's hearing, but she told him that if hcould not be seen on the 15th they would find another date around that time for his next appearance.

Bacca is charged with three counts of sexual battery of a minor under 12 in addition to several other charges alleging he inappropriately touched and gave oral sex to a former student who stayed at his house in 2009.  The student was the son of a woman he knew through Long Branch Elementary School where he tought at the time.

He is the reigning teacher of the year at Windy Hill Elementary School.  The Duval County School Board says the superintendent will recommend suspension without pay pending termination at the August 7th school board meeting.

Bacca remains in jail not eligible for bond.
