Teen injured in Mandarin fire

Jacksonville, FL —

A 14-year-old boy was hauled out of a house in the 10000 block of Indian Walk Avenue in Mandarin Wednesday night.

The boy was found along with a Great Dane when Jacksonville Fire and Rescue showed up at the house around 4 p.m.  He was taken to Baptist Medical Center in critical condition.

Another teenager told firefighters when they arrived on scene that he thought his friend's brother was inside.  Tom Francis with JFRD said firefighters made their way in, found the boy, and transported him to Baptist Medical Center.

"From the fire department's vantage point, undeniably a successful operation with a life saved, since we've since heard that the juvenile is doing fine."

The dog found with the boy was also revived and transported to a local veterinary hospital.

Fire officials aren't sure yet how the kitchen fire first started.  They're investigating further into the cause.

Tom Francis reminds everyone that more than half of all residential structure fires originate in the kitchen, so never leave food unattended on the stove while cooking, and make sure your smoke detector is working.
