Third graders get their FCAT results

By Kevin Rincon

Jacksonville, FL —

Duval County third graders showed improvement for the fifth straight year in math, and in reading that stayed the same.

The results were released on Thursday statewide for all third graders.

In math 79% of students got a 3 or higher, a 5 percent increase from last year.  Students need to get a 2 out of 5 to be promoted.

The biggest gains were made by Hogan-Spring Glen Elementary School, Henry Kite Elementary School and Normandy Village Elementary School.  All of those schools improved their scores by 28 points from last year.

In reading here in Duval 69% of students got a 3 or higher.  That stayed the same from last year and it stayed the same at the state level too, which was at 72%.

We talked to Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals about the scores, he said the math scores are promising, “Those continue to excel at a far faster pace than the state and the other large urban districts.”

His initial reaction to the reading scores, “we have a lot of work to do.”  He says those scores have to go up because if they don’t that means there’s more work to do in the upper levels.

We’re expecting more FCAT scores to come in next week, those could include the intervene schools.
