It officially begins the countdown to the “Week of Valor” but is also turning our attention to next year.
The USS Bataan has officially docked in Naval Station Mayport, with construction turning the carrier in to a basketball arena now set to begin. The Bataan will host the Navy-Marine Corps Classic between the Florida Gators and the Georgetown Hoyas next Friday.
“Bringing something new to Jacksonville that will really showcase the city,” says Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown.
Nearly one thousand crew members came in with the Bataan, and while they will only be staying here as long as the ship before it returns to its homeport in Norfolk, VA, that represents what will be coming to Jacksonville soon.
The Bataan is one of three ships which represents the Amphibious Ready Group which will be homeported at Naval Station Mayport beginning the end of next year.
“That’s two thousand families who are gunna have to purchase homes, who are gunna have to sign up for school,” Brown says.
Brown says that will be a great boost economically for our city, which has such a large economic base in the military.
The Classic is one of the highlights of the “Week of Valor” which kicks off Monday. Brown says it is important to designate a week to honor our servicemen and veterans, and deliver with real resources and aid. You can find a full schedule for the week attached to the left.
