Voter registration up in NE Florida; helpful links inside

By Gene Wexler

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

Compared to the 2008 General Election, the number of voters registered in Duval, St. Johns and Clay counties have increased.

Duval County

Duval County's Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland says this year's voter registration numbers indicate more people are interested in the upcoming election.

“We’re definitely at the highest level we’ve ever had registered voters in Duval County,” Holland told WOKV.

He’s expecting more than 550,000 registered voters when all is said and done.

In the 2008 election there were 536,584 registered voters.  Holland thinks it’s a sign of more interest because the county’s population hasn’t increased much since then.

Holland says Democrats still hold the majority this year, but they're down 9,000 voters since 2008.

Republicans are up 11,000 voters.

Holland says the biggest gain has been the independent voters.  They’re up 14,000 since the last election.

Holland says the ballot is four pages long, so he's encouraging voters to vote by mail.

“If you wait until Election Day, you’ll be in line two to three hours,” he said.

St. Johns County

St. Johns County Supervisor of Election Vicky Oakes tells WOKV the voter registration count is at an all-time high.

“The most we have ever had in St. Johns County,” she said.

“This county is growing.”

So far they have 151,980 registered voters.  The total for the 2008 election was 131,744.

They’ve got over 15,000 requests for absentee ballots, and Oakes says they’re expecting over 30,000.

Right now there are 80,821 registered Republicans in the county, and 38,594 registered Democrats.  The “other” voters total 32,565 registered.  These are not the final numbers.

“Hopefully we’ll see a good turnout this year,” Oakes said.

This is also the first time in St. Johns County history that they have a two page ballot.

The front page of the first page has the candidates, and the rest of the ballot is the 12 proposed Florida Constitution Amendments.

Oakes is encouraging all voters to read up on the amendments that will be on the ballot.

“If people aren’t prepared then it’s just going to take a longer time,” she said.

Clay County

We're hearing from the Clay County Supervisor of Elections Office that voter registration numbers are up this year.

Kara Boseman, Voter Outreach Coordinator, said they’re up about 11,000 voters so far compared to 2008.

As of Tuesday night, they have 131,492 voters registered.  In the 2008 election, they had 120,656 registered.  In the 2010 election, they had 122,016 registered voters.

There are 72,752 registered Republicans.  Democrats have 31,565 registered.  And 27,175 are “other” registered voters.  These are not the final numbers.
