Former Brevard County Congressman David Weldon announced today that he’s running in the Republican primary to try and oust Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.

With less than three months to go until the primary in August, Weldon launched his Web site today complete with an advertisement slamming President Obama on a slew of issues including healthcare, the constitution, religion, and taxes.

“Many Floridians feel President Obama has traded America's greatness for international acceptance, turned his back on our Constitution and the intentions of our Founding Fathers and crushed the economic engine that helped make America great,” Weldon said.

Those words are echoed in his ad.

Weldon is up against GOP frontrunner Congressman Connie Mack who recently received an endorsement from presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

The two others in the race are former Sen. George LeMieux and businessman Mike McCallister who is now trailing in money and name recognition.

Mack and LeMieux have raised about $1 million each, so Weldon will have some catching up to do in the funding department.

According to Real Clear Politics, their average of all the major polls shows that Congressman Mack leads in the race against Sen. Nelson within an 8.4 point spread.  LeMieux is in second with a 16.7 point spread.

Weldon won a congressional seat in the 1994 election.  A doctor by training, he representated parts of the Space Coast until retiring in 2008 when Republican Bill Posey won the seat.

He built up a conservative record and helped found the Israel Allies Caucus during his seven terms in Congress.

You can see his newly launched Web site here.
