JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

David Boon is suing two Jacksonville doctors in his wife’s death last year.  He says they failed to tell her to stop taking birth control pills before she underwent surgery.

Brooke Boon died from pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in the lungs, according to her death certificate.

She died two days after she had what’s commonly called a “mommy makeover,” which includes a tummy tuck, a breast life and several other procedures.  She had a four-hour procedure.

The lawsuit states that Boon’s primary care physician, Gary Glicksteen of Baptist Primary Care, and plastic surgeon, Daniel Calloway, were negligent in not taking her off the birth control pill Yasmin before the surgery.

Family attorney Steve Pajcic said he has evidence that proves both men knew she was taking the contraceptive.

“"The combination of birth control pills with a major surgery of four hours or more is a deadly combination," Pajcic said.

The lawsuit states that it is well-known by medical practicitioners that oral contraceptives increase the risk of fatal blood clots after surgery.

Pajcic cited the Physician’s Desk Reference, which states, “oral contraceptives should be discontinued from at least four weeks prior to and for two weeks after elective surgery.”

"I do not want this to happen to any other family," Boon said. "I do not think that two infant children should have to grow up without a mother because a physician did not do their job properly."

On Monday, Boon and attorney Pajcic filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Dr. Glicksteen and Dr. Calloway.

"I have two infant children that I'm raising and trying to be mother and father to both of them, and i fear: Can I do this?" Boon said. "It's not possible to replace their mother. It's not possible."

The family has not announced the amount so far.

The doctors have yet to comment, most likely because the charges were just filed on Monday.
