WOKV Investigates: St. Johns and Clay school security

By WOKV News Team

Jacksonville, FL —

We hear school leaders across Northeast Florida calling for a review of security procedures.

You'll see an increased police presence in St. Johns County the rest of this week before the holiday break.

Superintendent Joe Joyner says they are undergoing a review of their emergency plans and drills.

Joyner says the tragedy in Connecticut will open the discussion of school safety and he encourages parents to contact your child's school principal if you have suggestions on building security.

In Clay County, the posted policy on school security reads:

The School District takes proactive measures to protect the safety of all students and staff members. Among other things, district officials work closely with local, state and federal emergency management officials in developing and maintaining plans for potential emergencies. These plans include procedures on how to respond to critical incidents, such as a fire or tornado, and school personnel practice these drills regularly. All schools conduct:

  • At least two tornado/severe weather drills per school year.
  • A minimum of two bus evacuation drills per school year.
  • At least seven fire drills per school year.
  • At least two lock-down drills per school year.
  • All schools have fire alarm systems with smoke and heat detectors covering every occupied space.
  • All schools have emergency lights, exit signs, fire extinguishers every 200 feet, two-way intercom system, and a security check-in/check-out system for visitors.
