The debate over whether or not to move the Supervisor of Elections Office to a new location or keep it where it is in the Gateway Mall is one that has been simmering in City Council for years. Now we're hearing about how much money it's costing you for every day they don't decide what to do.
"We've been through this process literally years," says Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland.
The city's lease at Gateway Mall currently costs about $51,000 a month and the facility is old, outdated, and has several issues that need to be addressed. Right now the city is deciding between two options -- remodel the current Gateway Mall location or move the office to a new home in the One Imeson Business Park.
"We've actually been wasting taxpayer dollars for over six months because we've been paying the $51,000 at Gateway and under the new lease we pay approximately half that amount," says councilman Steven Joost.
Signing a new lease at either location would more than halve what the city currently pays. Our partner Action News investigated and found that after the six months free, rent at Gateway comes out to about $25,000 for the remaining six months, then drops down to $23,583.33 a month. After a free year of rent at One Imeson the total cost would be $22,960.41 a month. Holland says if they do move, there's a time limit on how soon it needs to be done.
"We need to be in the new facility, if we move, by February 1."
Holland says taxpayers are not getting a deal with how long this debate has stretched out. City council is expected to vote next Tuesday.
