"The work starts now"- Lenny Curry elected Jacksonville Mayor

If you ask Lenny Curry- he was the underdog. It had, after all, been a generation since an incumbent Mayor was unseated in Jacksonville.

But now, Curry is planning for day one in office.

“The work starts right now, it starts right now. This is about one Jacksonville and about one people and about our future,” Curry said to a room full of supporters after declaring victory Tuesday night.

On a 51.31% to 48.69% vote- separated by about 5300 ballots- Curry defeated Democrat Mayor Alvin Brown. 36.89% of registered voters in Duval County cast a vote.

Curry thanks his wife, children, business partners and supporters for pushing him to victory while restating that he will waste no time working to fulfill his campaign promises.

“Every family, every person, every kid, every neighborhood will know that we care about them,” he says.

Curry says cutting back on crime, creating economic opportunity for all, and giving Duval students a world class public education are his priorities.

He also took the time to thank Brown for his service to the City, and left the door open to work together for the benefit of Jacksonville in the future. Brown told his supporters that he is proud of the work he was able to do while in office.

“36,000 new jobs, unemployment cut in half, Downtown is thriving- we left a strong foundation to build on,” Brown says.

He vowed to continue to fight for opportunity for all in the City.

“This city has given me a tremendous opportunity, said if you work hard and play by the rules you can make it in Jacksonville, Florida,” Brown says.

Curry says he’s not just ready to get to work, but he told the people of Jacksonville to hold him accountable for fulfilling his promises.

Republican Mike Williams also beat out Democrat Ken Jefferson in the race to succeed long-time Sheriff John Rutherford. There was a slightly larger, 6200 vote, margin between them- 51.54% of the vote for Williams and 48.46% for Jefferson.

Republican Anna Brosche unseated the only incumbent City Council member who was on the ballot, Kimberly Daniels, for At Large Group 1. All other incumbent City Council members who were seeking reelection secured it in March.

We've got a full breakdown of the other City Council races as well.
