The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has arrested a man suspected in the slaying of a 49-year-old woman and arson fire of a Green Cove Springs home earlier this month.
Police suspect 25-year-old Leo Kaczmar III killed Maria Ruiz, then set the house she was living in on fire to cover up the crime. Her burned remains were discovered inside the home on Dothan Road on December 13.
Kaczmar was also a resident of the Green Cove Springs home. Duval County authorities arrested him late Wednesday night for failing to register as a sex offender. He's being held on that charge on a $50,000 bond.
Kaczmar's criminal history includes soliciting a minor for sex via the internet, attempted burglary and felony theft. Police have not determined a motive in the killing, but say Ruiz, a homeless woman, lived with Kaczmar and his uncle at the Green Cove Springs home.
"It wasn't right. Not a bit," the uncle said following his nephew's arrest. The uncle has been living in a garage since the home was destroyed by fire. "I feel responsible because I made him go get her. And this is what they did."
