JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

There will be a new general manager coming to the Jaguars front office.

The Jaguars have fired Gene Smith after seasons of underperforming.  Jacksonville finished the 2012 season in last place in the AFC South at 2-14, losing the last five games of the season.  On Sunday the Jaguars lost 38-20 to the Tennessee Titans after a strong showing in the first half gave way to interceptions and defensive touchdowns in the second.

Jaguar fans are saying it's about time something be shaken up.

"Honestly I don't think it'd be a great loss because since he's been in that position as general manager he hasn't really done that much for the team, especially with the losing seasons.  I'm definitely disappointed with the outcome of this season," said one Jaguar fan in San Marco.

"If you're going to sell a team like that, you should have cleaned house and Shad Khan should have come in and put his own coaching staff in," said another Jags fan, David.  "If you're going to take a team over, take it over from scratch.  You know, we've been rebuilding for ten years.  You know, people are tired of hearing "there's next year."  If you don't do something pretty soon there's not going to be a next year."

Fans say they'd like to see someone with good knowledge and sense of the draft come in and replace Smith.  They say one of the biggest disappointments during Smith's time as GM has been draft choices.

There will now likely be questions as to the future of head coach Mike Mularkey in Jacksonville.  Mularkey was brought in at the beginning of the season to help a struggling offense regain its footing after having success as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.  Currently there is no indication that Mularkey will not be on the Jaguars' sideline next year but if a new general manager comes in, the decision may be in that person's hands whether to keep Mularkey on staff.

In a press conference Monday morning, Mularkey talked about his relationship with Smith developing from nothing into a very strong, personal relationship over the course of the season.

"I have a lot of respect for Gene, for the way he does things and the way he works and what he's left here to work with."

As for his own job security, Mularkey said he had not been told that he will not be coaching the Jaguars next season, and unless he is told otherwise he is moving foward as head coach.

Here is the entire statement by Jaguars owner Shad Khan:

“Now it is time for the Jacksonville Jaguars to begin a new chapter. We’re not looking back. I’ve made it clear from Day One that we pledge nothing less than to deliver the first Super Bowl championship to Jacksonville. Our fans have been remarkably loyal over the years, and they were truly outstanding this past season. We simply must do better for our fans.

“Our organization’s business unit had an extremely impressive year and I anticipate even better days ahead in 2013 and beyond, but we all understand this is a football business above all else. With that, I’m determined to find the right man to lead our football operations, someone who shares my vision, understands the commitment we will demand, and is qualified and ready to seize this opportunity. That search begins today.”
