This Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 aerial photo shows thousands of cars which were damaged in the Oct. 29, 2012 Superstorm Sandy and stored on the runways at Calverton Executive Airpark in Calverton, N.Y. Environmentalists are decrying the placement of the 18,000 damaged automobiles at the defunct defense plant on eastern Long Island near the environmentally protected Pine Barrens. The town supervisor in Riverhead disputes the idea that there is any hazard. The town leased the runways to salvage companies and could reap up to $2.7 million under the lease agreement.
