Pope Benedict XV, born Giacomo Paolo Giovanni Battista della Chiesa, was only 59 when he was chosen to lead the Church during World War I. He declared the Holy See as neutral during, what he called, “the suicide of civilized Europe," and tried to mediate peace in 1916 and 1917.
