McCain Takes One More Step to the GOP Nod

By Jamie Dupree

I know that Mike Huckabee continues to talk about staying in the GOP race until "it's over," but with each win for John McCain, he keeps lacing up his shoes that say "Republican Nominee 2008" on the sides.

McCain's victory last night in Wisconsin - called immediately by the networks when the polls closed at 8pm CT - was another piece of evidence that McCain is on the verge of getting the delegates he needs to claim victory.

Huckabee has a schedule already for Texas, with rallies and even a fundraiser on Thursday, the same day that he visits the Alamo in San Antonio.

But unless there is some kind of major change, this is John McCain's nomination.

Huckabee still got a decent number of votes in Wisconsin, but McCain was winning more than a majority there.

"Thank you, Wisconsin, for bringing us to the point when even a superstitious naval aviator can claim with confidence and humility that I will be our party's nominee for President," McCain said last night.

"I, again, want to commend Governor Huckabee, who has shown impressive grit and passion himself, and whom, though he remains my opponent, I have come to admire very much," McCain added.

McCain may not be able to win enough delegates to clinch his victory on March 4th, but every day it gets more and more mathematically impossible for Huckabee to do anything but finish second.

Some in DC think that Huckabee is just trying to make sure he has more delegates than Mitt Romney, so the former Arkansas Governor can honestly say that he finished second to McCain.
