Convicted Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska made it official on Wednesday, as he conceded defeat in his re-election bid to Mark Begich, the Democratic mayor of Anchorage.
"I am deeply grateful to Alaskans for allowing me to serve them for 40 years in the U.S. Senate," Stevens said in a written statement.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to work with Alaskans of all political persuasions to make this state that we all love a better place."
As of Tuesday night, Stevens trailed by over 3700 votes, with only about 2500 left to count.
That gave Democrats 58 seats in the Senate, with two races still undetermined, in Minnesota and Georgia.
Meanwhile, the word on the street is that John McCain will run for another term in the Senate in 2010. Just what McCain wants to think about right now, is another campaign.
Also, word came in on Wednesday that McCain had been certified the winner in the state of Missouri, by just over 3600 votes.
It was the first time since 1956 that Missouri did not vote for the winner in the Presidential race. That year, the Show Me State went for Adlai Stevenson, who lost to incumbent President Dwight Eisenhower.
McCain gets 11 Electoral Votes from Missouri, making the final tally Obama 365 and McCain 173.
