UCONN's Great Year

Previous Posts

So it’s 5:30 am when I’m writing this and I’m already sick of the saying “UCONN is the top dog”, but it was an impressive season for the Huskies. Their resume speaks for itself, undefeated against teams outside the Big East, winners of 11 straight, winning the Big East Tournament, and now National Champions. Not too bad for a team that was unranked to start the year and a team that everyone thought was still a year or two away from being any good.

With the UCONN win 53 to 41 over butler Huskies coach Jim Calhoun became the oldest coach to ever win it all, he’s 68. It’s Calhoun’s third national title putting him in the same class with guys like John Wooden and Bobby knight to win 3 titles. In fact there are only five guys that have ever won three or more national titles. But what nobody is talking about is the Big East dominance when it comes to play against or as 8 seeds in the championship game. There have been only three times in history an 8 seed had played for a national championship and each time a current Big East Team won the game. First time was when Louisville beat down the 8 seed UCLA, back in ’85 Villanova won it all as an 8 seed and off coarse most recently the Huskies beat down number 8 Butler.

Now that the season is over the biggest question will be will Kemba Walker stay in school or head to the NBA. Definitely a top three if not the number 1 overall pick if he comes out this year or will he pull a Tim Tebow and say he’s coming back. If he does return UCONN has got to be the favorite to win it all again next year.
