It’s always good when two sides can get together but don’t expect too much out of this round from the NFL and Players Association. Like I said it’s great to know that they are at least talking but the forced mediation of Judge Nelson is no different than the talks that happened just before the lockout. Judge Nelson appointed Chief Magistrate Arthur Boyland to oversee the talks but he has no power to force an agreement. So he can listen and recommend but neither side has to agree on his recommendations. Add that to the fact there both sides are waiting “a couple of weeks” for Judge Nelsons ruling I don’t see either side rushing to get a deal done.
Sure this could lead to some kind of deal before the draft that lets teams make trades and sign free agents but it’s not likely. The longer this takes the harder it will be to start the season on time. Here’s the approximate countdown clock if it was a normal season
