Time keeps ticking closer and closer to an NFL season not starting on time and neither side seems to care. The latest example comes from the forced mediation yesterday when the two sides decided not to meet again until May 16th. Ya kinda get the feeling both sides are acting like we didn’t back in school, you know the teacher assigns a big project and you figure you have a couple weeks before its due so decide to put it off to the last minute. Hopefully both sides get it together before they realize it’s too late.
Now maybe your thinking games don’t start till august and it’s only April they have time. Well I can’t say this enough you can’t just throw this whole thing together at the last minute. Remember even if we have a new collective bargaining agreement 1 day before the scheduled start of training camp the season still won’t start on time. I’m mean even though players say they are meeting off the field and working to stay in shape for whenever the season starts there are well over a 500 players that don’t have a team. We all know about all the free agents that have to wait for a deal to get signed but don’t forget the 255 guys that get drafted not to mention all the undrafted players that latch on with teams. None of these players can even chat with a team until the deal is done and we’ve seen how hard it can be to sign a draft pick on time when you have a full off season.
I still believe the cutoff date has to be July 1st for the season to go on 100% as planned. We may still see all the games start on time if a deal is done after that but how many rookies and big name free agents will be able to make an immediate impact if we miss that date. I don’t see a whole lot.
