It’s an age old saying, “it’s better to give than to receive” and that seemed to be the Jags motto in free agency. They picked up guys that will give the pain and forgot about picking up guys that receive the ball. Don’t get me wrong I think the jags did a great job fixing the defense but how is offense going to score points this year. This defense isn’t good enough to hold teams under 10 points a game but that might be the only way the Jags win games this year.
Right now the number 1 receiver on the team is Mike Thomas, he’s a good wide out but he won’t strike fear into any opponent this year. After Thomas who will be the Jags second and third receivers? Osgood, Jason Hill, Underwood? The Jags are taking a real risk with some unproven receivers going into the year especially with the good crop of receivers that were in this year’s free agency class. Steve Breaston, Plaxico Burress, Santonio Holmes, Chad Ocho Cinco just to name a few where all out there. Even if the Jags didn’t think they could afford those big names there were still 2nd tier guys like Braylon Edwards, Derrick Mason, and Sidney Rice. Don’t worry Jags fans there is still hope that a veteran proven receiver can join the Jags. T.J Houshmanzadeh, Jericho Cotchery, Brandon Stokley, even T.O. or Randy Moss are still available and could come here.
With the way the roster stands now it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how the Jags Opponents will defend them this season. Double team Marcedes Lewis, single coverage on the wide outs, and that leaves 7 or 8 in the box every play to stop Mojo. With the loss of Mike Sims Walker this year and the lack of a well known wide guy, the Jags will see this set up ever week until the young receivers prove they can play. Offensively you can’t run the ball effectively without the threat of a passing attack and at this moment the Jags have to passing attack.
