Fantasy Time

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

Well with no NFL action tonight I figured I’d chat about what most of you have either done already or will do in the next two weeks, draft your fantasy team. As the “Fantasy football Jedi Master” during Jaguars’ tailgate I kinda know what I’m doing but let’s be honest, FF is a crap shoot. Sure there is a strategy involved but if your first 3 draft picks all suffer season ending injuries in week 1 all the strategies in the world probably won’t help you. with all that said I won this league last year and even though they say the draft order is random, I magically got the last overall pick.

With 14 guys in our league and a snake style draft I made 2 straight picks and waited around for half an hour (I was able to catch up on some nice beer drinking in between picks though). With the last pick I was hoping somebody good would fall to me, maybe a Michael Vick or running back but as each pick went off the board I knew a top tier running back was out of the question. So as my first pick finally came up I was able to grab Philip Rivers and with pick two right away I went a little risky and took Larry Fitzgerald. Risky because I knew I’d have to wait almost a full 2 rounds before picking again. With picks 3 and 4 I got my first running back of the draft DeAngelo Williams and I grabbed Antonio Gates. Again I had about 30 mins in between picks (and more beers) but at least I had a nice core group of players to start with. Next up I still needed another running back so I went with Tim Hightower, mostly because I kept seeing a highlight of his big run the night before.  But then I had a choice, I need a receiver and Ward, Britt. Austin Collie, and Percy Harvin were all still available. I went with Hines Ward, now I had my starters so when my next picks came up I had to decide between backups or defense/kickers.

Rounds 7-10 looked like this, Beanie Wells and Baltimore defense followed by Braylon Edwards and Pierre Garcon. My final rounds in order went McNabb, Thomas Jones, Scobee, Ricky Williams, and Eddie Royal. So my team is decent but not great, I’ll keep you posted how it looks throughout the year. comment on how you think my team looks.
