I want to go back to something that happened on Monday night. Listening to Jaguars Monday with GM Gene Smith something really surprised me. Cole and Gene where talking about a guy that stood out in the game Saturday night and the person they decide to bring up first was… the punter? Of all the guys in a game that stood out they choose to compliment the punter Matt Turk before anybody else. This is a really bad sign with the season less than two weeks away.
One thing you have to realize is coaches, GM’s, and owners very rarely will call a player out in the media. They like to use codes and it’s not just the Jags, all front office guys do this. Instead of the coach saying a guy sucks, they say he did some good things and he needs to work on a few things. In front of the media instead of a coach saying there is no reason we should lose to this team, they’ll say this teams has some good players and we can’t over look them. Nobody will say what they really think in public so they don’t piss any one off or look like an idiot when things don’t quite pan out. Think about it, any time a coach show emotion in a press conference it becomes a sound bite used until the end of time. Like “THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE” and “PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS?”. This is why bringing up a punter as the first player to say good job is so scary.
This seems like one of those secret codes the front offices uses. So instead of saying the two QB’s looked ugly, and the defense made Ryan Fitzpatrick look like Joe Montana, or if this team can’t score against Buffalo they won’t score on anybody this year, he comes out with “Matt Turk looked great against Buffalo.” The first guy that comes to mind in a game really should be the quarterback, running back, or defense star. What does that say about Jags if during the “tune up game” for the regular season the General Manager wants to talk about the punting game first? In a perfect game the punter doesn’t see the field but in the most important game of the preseason he is the MVP.
It’s going to be a long season if the best aspect of this team week after week is the kicking game. Punting or kicking should never be talked about unless it’s in the final minutes of a press conference as an “oh by the way I forgot to mention”. At least if Scobee starts getting mentions every week it means good things for me because he’s on my Fantasy team.
