You have to love this USA story at the Women’s World Cup, the comeback wins, the fact they needed a playoff just to qualify, and that they didn’t win their group. Unfortunately Japan has their own story going during this World Cup and it might be a better one for the script writers. Don’t get me wrong I think the U.S comeback win against Brazil was one of the best wins in any sport in history, but it hard to talk about an inspirational story when you’re the number 1 ranked team in the world.
However, if you want to look at a Disney type story Japan has it. Think about it Japan was devastated by that tsunami not only disrupting the training of the Japanese but I’m sure many of them where more worried about family members than soccer. Most of the media in Japan have ignored their team and the team doesn’t have the same following of fans that a European team would. They finally make it to the World Cup and they lose their group with sets up a game with the two time defending Champs. In the game against Germany no one gave Japan a chance but the managed to pull out the 1-0 victory also in extra time. Then yesterday a win vs. Sweden set up a David vs. Goliath scenario. The number 1 ranked USA team, a team that Japan has never beaten takes on the Japanese in their first ever World Cup Final.
Think about all the sports movies ever made, 99 percent of them tell the ultimate underdog story. The Miracle on Ice, Rudy, Rocky, Hoosiers, Remember the Titans I could go on and on but they all talk about overcoming insurmountable odds to win. Either one of these teams could get a movie made about their performances but I’ll hedge my bet by saying whoever wins the championship game has the better chance of seeing their story on the big screen.
