Today starts an annual event on ESPN that I never really understood, the national spelling bee. Why does ESPN every year show the spelling bee, it’s not a sport or is it? It’s the 18th year ESPN will cover the event. I always think about the famous scene from the movie Dodgeball, ESPN 8 The Ocho “if it’s almost a sport we’ve got it here”. But the spelling bee has had its share of memorable moments.
Who could forget the kid that fainted, stood back up like nothing happened and spelled the word correctly? Or how about the girl that knew her final word and started screaming out every letter E…U…0…N…Y…M, euonym yeaaaaa. And my personal favorite the guy before spelling Chinook right threw out his best Napoleon Dynamite impression “do the chickens have large talons” and none of the announcers got the reference. If you need a good laugh this morning go to Youtube and check these videos out, you’ll be glad you did.
What memorable moments could we see this year? And who will take home the coveted bee trophy? Semifinals air at 10am today, with the finals coming tonight at 8:30pm on ESPN.
