U.S. Women Overseas

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

It’s not often you can talk about American women playing sports overseas, but this week it’s definitely a top story. Unfortunately it’s not all good news for Americans, especially in jolly ol’ England. We saw something at Wimbledon that doesn’t happen often, both Williams sisters going down on the same day.  Defending champ Serena Williams was taken down by Marion Bartoli 6-3, 7-6 (6), and 5 time champ Venus a straight set loser as well 6-2, 6-3 to Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria. Venus and Serena have won 9 of the last 11 titles at Wimbledon but this time it wasn’t meant to be. It’s the first time that both players were in a tournament and both were out before the quarterfinals and first grand slam since the French Open in 2008 that they both lost on the same day.

But the Americans have a chance today for a little redemption. The U.S. women’s soccer team will make their 2011 World Cup debut today against North Korea. The Ladies will go as far as goal keeper Hope Solo will take them. The U.S has never lost a World Cup Game that Hope started Four years ago in China, the U.S. tied North Korea 2-2 in its opening game. A win is obviously the goal but a tie isn’t bad either, the American’s need as many points as possible in one of the tougher groups at this year’s World Cup. This group with the U.S, North Korea, Columbia, and Sweden feature 3 of the top 8 teams in the world.

Today we hope that the U.S will reverse the curse and get a win overseas today. It should be fun to watch today at noon.
