Karma For Kareem

There is a famous saying karma is a b****, and I think I found some evidence of that in one Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Jabbar is upset that he doesn’t have a statue outside the Lakers Arena and he probably should. The guy is the NBA’s all time leading scorer, a six time mvp, nineteen time all star, and won six championships. Not to mention all the records and championships he had at UCLA.  The staples center already has some statues outside of the biggest athletes in L.A. history, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Chick Hearn, Wayne Gretzky and Oscar De La Hoya all are enshrined in stone outside the arena. So the only reason I can think Kareem wasn’t included is because of karma.

About ten years ago I was walking through LAX airport and who is sitting there Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He wasn’t in a hurry to catch a flight, he was just sitting alone typing on his laptop. So being the sports fan that I am I go up to him very nicely, say I’m a big fan and ask for his autograph. He looks up straight faced as could be and say “sorry I can’t do that.” Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying it’s because of me that he doesn’t have a statue, but I’m willing to bet I’m just one of thousands of fans he did the same thing to.

Kareem was asked about his thoughts on the statue and he said “It's either an oversight or they're taking me for granted.” Kinda sounds like the way he’s been taking for granted all the fans that paid money to see him and bought his jerseys by refusing to sign autographs. Karma will get you every time.
