Memorial Day week end is almost here so that means a couple things. It’s time to remember those who gave their lives for our country, 3 day weekends, and of course college lacrosse. Now I bet a lot of people still think of lacrosse as a sport nobody cares about but all you have to do is look at one of the final teams and see that’s not true anymore.
Sure you still have power house teams like Virginia, Duke, and Maryland in but who would have thought Denver would even have a lacrosse team let alone be in the final four. For a long time lacrosse was strictly a mid Atlantic sport but obviously it’s grown so much that a western U.S. team is in the finals. Not only that but the playing field is so level now in the NCAA’s the highest seed still left is a 5.
Still don’t believe me just look around the First Coast. J.U. is playing D-1 lax, Everbank Field just held its first lacrosse game, and at least for now high schools are playing the sport. This is why it’s so sad to see a sport that’s made so much progress be threatened by school budget cuts. I know what was like not having a high school lacrosse team when I played. I managed to learn the game and play D-2 in college but I hate seeing other kids have to go through what I did. Who knows maybe I would have been able to get a D-1 scholarship and not have so much student loan debt if we just had a team. I could see a bunch of students facing the same problem if they cut sports in schools.
