No QB Controversy

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

The biggest surprise coming out of the game this week wasn’t the loss or the way the offense played it was the fact that the future franchise QB was benched in the second half. Gabbert started off the game ok he didn’t through a TD pass and again it wasn’t his fault. A big drop by Marcades Lewis in the end zone when he was so wide open really started the Jags struggles. I’ve said it before but you can’t win in this league without scoring points. Sunday the Jags took sole possession of last place in points scored for the season. Even the 0-11 colts have scored more points than the Jags this year and that was part of the reason for the QB switch yesterday. But don’t expect a quarterback controversy in Jacksonville.

Gabbert was highly ineffective this week (nothing new) and in couple drives McCown had he looked better than Gabbert did for most of the game. The problem is with the loss to Houston the Jags were eliminated from winning the AFC South, they can still win a wild card but that is pretty unlikely as well. You know Gabbert is the Future of the Jags so there is really no benefit sitting him for the rest of the season. A switch to McCown won’t increase the chance to make the playoffs and Gabbert can only be helped by more in game experience so I really don’t see any reason to go with McCown in the final 5 games. Even Jack Del Rio stated after the game the Gabbert will remain the starter.

Jags are dead last in scoring and passing yards this season which is very surprising since they usually are playing from behind meaning they should be passing the ball more. Some of the blame has to go to Gabbert but most of it is because of the receiving core. Dropped passes and failure to get open is really hurting the passing game. But good news the “great rookie receiver”  that so many people were high on this off season caught is first pass of the season. First ones always the toughest to get.
