Will Jack Be Gone?

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

Jags fans you’re not alone. With the Jags 1-3 start many of the fans out there are calling for Jack Del Rio’s head but honestly a lot of people have wanted him fired long before the season started. Across the NFL many teams are going through the same thought process, fire the coach or tough it out for this year? the theory going into the season was with the lockout an shortened off season the teams with least amount of change would have the best chance to succeed this year. Some of that held true with Green Bay, New Orleans, even Houston and Buffalo all tops in the league. For others it hasn’t seemed to work like the Eagles, Chiefs, and St. Louis but did you know that Jack Del Rio isn’t the favorite to be fired first.

They say in Vegas there is a line for everything so you can bet on which NFL coach will be fired first. According to Sportsbook.com the Favorite to get the ax before anyone else is the Dolphins coach Tony Sparano at -350.  Next on the list is the Jags own Jack Del Rio at +225, followed by the Vikes’ Leslie Frazier, the Chief’s Todd Haley, the Colt’s Jim Caldwell, and the Bengals’ Marvin Lewis. I thinks it’s safe to say that Jack is gone after this year but It brings up the question should the Jags part ways with Del Rio in season? Get the idea out of your head that the Jags will fire Del Rio and bring in Bill Cower during the season, it just doesn’t work that way. Normally if a head coach is let go in season somebody on the staffs takes over on an interim basis but who on the staff is capable of doing that. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter? Not the way the offense has played this year. Maybe D head man Mel Tucker, but do you really want to take a coach away from the best part of the Jags team this year?

Usually you make a change mid season if you want to try and salvage the season. I really think no matter who coached the Jags they would have a hard time beating the Saints, Steelers, and Ravens. You’re not going to save any money firing Del Rio; in fact it might cost you more to do it. I think the drop dead date for Jack is week 8. If he survives the mid way point of the season and heads into the bye week still as the coach he will be safe until the end. all things considered i don't think a new coach will be able to salvage this year, best to wait till the offseason and have your pick of a bunch of coaches that have playoff experience.
