New Era For The Jags

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

Well obviously there was a big Jags story yesterday and I say that only because WOKV is actually reporting on sports so it must be big. David Garrard fired the same way he got the job back in ’07, right before the season started in favor of the backup. Not many people should be surprised that Garrard is gone; I think we all saw the writing on the wall when they drafted a QB with the 10th overall pick but this is a surprising move on two fronts. First, is the fact that Luke McCown will be the week 1 starter and not Blaine Gabbert and two that the move happened just five days before the start of the season.

Garrard was never going to take this team to the Superbowl he’s an average QB at best. Even though he made the Probowl but let’s be honest the only reason he made the team is because like 6 guys ahead of him declined the invite. With all that being said there are definitely teams that can use David Garrard’s services. So I think the biggest mistake in all this is the fact that the Jags didn’t trade away David. I’m sure they tried and I’m sure they didn’t get the value they were looking for but looking back on it even a 6th or 7th round pick is better value than letting him walk. Look for the 49ers, Seahawks, and yes maybe even the Colts as a possible new home for Garrard. Could you imagine if Manning is out a lot long than people think and the last game of the year is David Garrard and the Colts vs. Luke McCown and the Jags winner wins the AFC South? You can’t write a better story than that.

Not it’s the Luke McCown show here in Jacksonville but both he and Blaine know it’s only a matter of time until Gabbert is the starter. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gabbert finishes this year as the starter especially after the brutal open schedule that the Jags play. My guess is sometime between the bye week in week 9 and two weeks later when the Jags take on the Browns. No matter what happens this season Jack Del Rio now has his built in excuse if they stink because we all know with all the QB changes the Jags didn’t have chance to get any consistency.
