What's In An Injury Report?

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

Today we take a look at the never accurate and always vague injury report. Teams are required by the NFL to start releasing injury reports on Wednesday but the problem is no matter what they say the truth always seems to change on Sunday. There are three categories listed for ever player, full participation, limited, and did not participate. Full is obvious, the player had a normal practice, limited means they didn’t take the normal number of reps, and did not practice again obvious. Sounds pretty straight forward but the problem is this early in the week just because a guy didn’t practice doesn’t mean he won’t play. I’ve seen guys not participate in practice all week and still have an amazing game on Sunday and the other hand I’ve seen guys be limited all week and then not play.

It’s not an exact science and even though this is designed to not give a team an advantage by hiding an injury, teams have gotten pretty good at manipulating the system. The reason I bring this whole thing up is the Jags injury report this week is pretty scary. Four guys didn’t participate in practice at all, four other guys were limited all of them are starters and really a key to the Jags success on game day. Derek Cox, Aaron Kampman, Jason Hill, and Marcedes Lewis all were held out of practice while Tyson Alualu, Greg Jones, Rashean Mathis, Maurice Jones Drew all were limited. If all these guys were out I give the Jags a zero percent chance of beating the Jets but that’s why explained how the injury report works. There is no need to panic most of these guys will be in Sundays game. However I do think Aaron Kampman will still be out this week just because he really hasn’t played at all since last year and the big question mark is Marcedes Lewis. I think he is 50/50 for Sunday’s game and the longer he goes without practicing the less chance we see him against the Jets.

These reports will be released every day until Saturday so it is something to keep an eye on and even if we think we know who will play there always seems to be a surprise on Sunday morning just before 12 when the inactive list is released.  I don’t need to tell you the longer the injury report is the worse it is for the team. And just in case you were curious, linebacker David Harris is the only player on the Jets report.
