With the Jags game two just a few days away we get some good news and some bad. All the players that were limited in practice on Wednesday fully participated yesterday. The bad news all the guys that didn’t practice on Wednesday still didn’t practice yesterday. That includes Marcedes Lewis, Aaron Kampman, Derek Cox, and Jason Hill. Speaking of Jason Hill, what’s wrong with this guy? in case you missed it he basically gave the Jets a reason to really take it to the Jags. He basically said the Jets are nothing special they just get over hyped more than most teams. I have no problem with some competitive banter but this is coming from a guy that has zero TDs this season including the preseason, plus he might not even play this week. Way to leave your team hanging out to dry. It’s the equivalent of a guy doing a crazy touchdown dance when his team is already down 35-0. With all that being said here is the keys to this week’s Jags Jets Game.
THE FLUKE FACTOR
If you’re a betting guy like me you know game twos is the hardest ones to bet on because of one reason. You don’t know if how a team played in first game is going to be a constant or just a fluke. For some teams like the Patriots you can assume game one will be a standard but for a team like the Jags that aren’t dominate year after year you simply don’t know. So a game against a perennial playoff team is a great test to see just how good the Jags will be. Will Mojo be able to but up another great game? will Luke McCown be able to play well against a great defense? Will the Jags D be able to hold a team down for the majority of the game? or was it all a fluke in week one.
THE RECEIVERS
I’m going to keep bring up this group as a big question mark until they prove they can play and through the first 5 games including preseason they haven’t yet. Jags only had two receivers catch balls last week, 12 catches for just over 100 yards between them but zero TDs is the stat that stands out the most. Yards are nice but touchdowns is what wins games, just ask T.O when he played for the Eagles in the Super Bowl played here in Jacksonville. Don’t forget the Jags wide guys will be going against one of the best secondaries in the AFC.
JAGS D BACKS
Especially if Derek Cox can’t go this weekend that will put a real strain on the already thin secondary. Even at full strength it would be tough for the jags to match up against Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress, Dustin Keller, and Derrick Mason. Those guys alone were targeted 33 times last week not including the backs and tight ends that caught passes as well. If the Jags want to win they need to try and contain that offense.
Most people will say the playoffs aren’t made in September but for the Jags they need this game to really improve their chances. I’ve been saying it all year I really think the Jags need to win the AFC South but on the slim chance they are in contention for a wild card spot they will probably have the Jets competing with them. Head to head wins are the first tie breaker so a win will go a long way helping this team to get to the promise land. Good news is the Jags have won the past three meeting against the Jets bad news is the Jets under Rex Ryan are nearly perfect in September. Our coverage of the Jags and Jets get going at 10am with the Tailgate Show, Kickoff is at 1.
