Right now the Jags higher ups are being tight lipped on the QB situation, and they should be. Why not have Carolina play the game of guess the starting QB? The real question is do you play the rookie QB early or have him sit the bench a while. There are more successful examples of sitting the quarterback over playing him on day one but this year kinda throws a wrench in that and you can blame the Jags opponent this week.
Cam Newton magically jumped from a late round draft pick to the first overall guy this offseason, then in the preseason no one was sure if he would be able to pick up the offense this year, now he’s set the rookie record for passing in his first two games. Granted the Panthers are 0-2 but add Bengals rookie Andy Dalton to the mix and you see rookies QB are having success this year. Dalton is 1-1 on the season with 3 TDs and zero picks on a team that was going to struggle all year. Now obviously these rookie’s successes aren’t the only reason we are talking Gabbert or McCown this week, McCown 4 picks didn’t help the situation. I’m all for Gabbert taking over as the Qb, assuming both guys give you an equal chance to win why not go with the younger guy but the problem is in the schedule. When do you make a switch? Right now the Jags have two bottom tier teams sandwiched around the Saints (not know for their great defenses) not too bad for a rookie to get his first starts. But check out the schedule after that, back to back games against the two top defenses in the league in Pittsburg and home for the Ravens then a division match up against Houston. Not the best way to have a new QB gain confidence.
Personally I think the Jags should wait till after week 8 to start Gabbert. Week 9 is the bye so he gets two weeks to prepare for the Colts, beat the Colts and you’re a legend in this town. Let’s face it the Colts are very beatable this year. After the Colts the Jags get the Browns, another winnable game. A great way for Gabbert to start off his career. No matter who starts I think it’s safe to say the Jags will lose at least 3 of their next 6 games so why not make Luke the fall guy. The reason he is here is to keep the seat warm until Gabbert is ready and what better way to do that than to set Gabbert up as the hero of the second half. Gabbert can come in win a couple games get some excitement around the team and build some momentum to sell out the 3 straight home games starting on November 27th. Start him during the toughest stretch of the Jags schedule and you set up this season and possibly future seasons for a big fail.
