The big news from the Jags yesterday had nothing to do with the team but everything to do with the coach. Mike Mularkey was taken to the hospital after not feeling well. He met with the training staff and they advised him to go to the hospital for some tests. He was released yesterday late afternoon and is expected to be back with the team today. Defensive coordinator told us last night on the coaches show that he did talk with him and he was in good spirits and doing fine.
Now we don’t want to speculate too much about what happened to the coach, hopefully he gives us some details later today but thankfully it doesn’t sound too serious. What many people don’t know is coaches have one of the toughest jobs out there. Some will work 15 to 20 hours a day 7 days a week. It’s one of the few jobs out there that you are constantly criticized for especially when your record is 2-11. If you’re not used to the stress and long hours or if you’ve out of the game for a while like Mularkey has been it can be really taxing on your body. Hopefully when Mike Mularkey addresses the media later today we find out that it was only exhaustion and not something more serious.
No matter what you think about Mike Mularkey as a coach you have to worry about his health going forward. You could make a case that even though this is his first year with the Jags a 2 win season could get you fired. Now his health has to be factor into the decision of his future with the team. This is just one more factor that will add to what will already could be one of the most interesting Jags off season ever.
