Golf On TV

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

It was one of the greatest performances of all time for Phil Mickelson; he overcame a 6 shot deficit and won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am. At the same time Tiger played his worst round of the tournament and finished the round with a plus three tied for 15th overall. I know a lot of people that won’t watch golf unless it’s a Major or if Tiger and Phil are in contention so it wouldn’t surprise me if the ratings were huge for the final round. With all that being said I can’t understand why golf is the only sport that won’t show the entire match on TV.

Imagine if baseball, basketball or the NFL started their TV coverage at half time instead of the beginning of the game. I understand that gold takes a whole lot longer than the other sports but even NASCAR with show the entire race and those will take over 5 hours to finish. During the meat of the golf season there really aren’t any other sports on TV. For the most part there is no football and you may get a single baseball game or basketball game to compete with so why can’t the network cover the round. Now I’m not talking about covering the guys playing at 7am that really have no chance to win but they can at least start the coverage when the contenders hit the links. CBS didn’t start their coverage until the leaders were about half way through the final round. CBS isn’t alone all the networks do the same thing.

Maybe I’m just a little grumpy since it was the first Sunday without football since September but Sunday TV without football is so boring. At least if we can get a little competitive golf on TV there would be something to watch.
