Jeremy Lin: The NBA's version of Tim Tebow

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

If you don’t know who Jeremy Lin is than you don’t follow the NBA or watch SportsCenter which means you probably aren’t reading this blog. Linsanity has broken out all over the country this past week and it’s hard not to notice the similarities between Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow. Now I’m not talking about his off the field stuff or the values he has, but Lin has become the Tim Tebow of the NBA.

Jeremy Lin was a guy that nobody thought would be any good, fans and scouts included. Lin bounced around the league for a couple seasons after being undrafted out of Harvard. He was on the verge of being cut by the Knicks before he got an opportunity to play and made the most of that opportunity. Coming out of Florida Tebow was criticized more than any player I’ve ever seen. Most scouts said Tebow would never be a good NFL QB, then he got the chance to play his team started winning. Lin has been averaging 27 points and 8 assists in his first four starts and the Knicks have gone 4-0 since he entered the starting lineup. Same deal for Tebow, he took a floundering Denver team to a Division Title when he became the starter. Since Lin began starting the Knicks have the highest TV ratings in the league even though half the New York area can’t watch  because of a cable company’s blackout of the games. Sounds a lot like Tebow who sold out away arenas and seemed to be on TV every week no matter where he was playing.

Unfortunately it’s not all positives for Mr. Lincredible. Just like Tim Tebow it seems everyone is on opposite sides of the fence. You ever love him and think he will be great or you hate the attention he gets after playing only four games against poor teams. Even Lin’s 38 points against the Lakers had critics saying the Lakers aren’t the team they used to be. Same deal for Tebow the critics said his wins came against bad teams and it was more about what the defense was doing rather than Tebow winning the game. Just like during the football season and it seemed like every 5 minutes there was a story on SportsCenter about Tebow, now the show’s focus has been all Lin all the time. No matter how you feel about Lin he is a great story. He had everything going against him; people of Chinese decent and Harvard graduates rarely transition into an NBA superstars. Add the fact that he’s been sleeping on his brother’s couch this season and now is the talk of the league you have a Disney movie in the making.

Only time will tell how long the Linderella story will last especially with the Knicks two big superstars coming back into the lineup from injuries. One thing is for sure Super Lintendo had one shot and he made the most of it, say what you want about his future but his present should be a Linspiration to us all.
