A Different Year At Daytona

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

In ten years when anybody talks about the 2012 Daytona 500 it won’t be about Matt Kenseth’s win. This year will always be known for the delays. For the first time in history the race was forced to be run on Monday because of rain. The race actually didn’t finish until Tuesday morning in part to the late start but it had more to do with one of the most amazing crashes in history.

Usually when you hear about a spectacular crash it involves multiple cars but this one was all about what Juan Pablo Montoya hit, a jet engine drying truck filled with 200 gallons of fuel. Montoya stayed on the track during a caution when something broke on his car causing him to hit the truck creating a huge fire ball. Now I’m not the biggest racing fan but I can’t remember ever seeing a crash like this. The cleanup took over two hours leaving the fans and racers with nothing to do but wait.

This year will go down as one of the most interesting races in Daytona history and it had nothing to do with the finish. When you think about it the end of the race was pretty anticlimactic compared to how long everyone had to wait to see a checked flag. Whether it’s because of the finish or the drama before and during the race everyone face fans looks forward to the Daytona 500 and that should increase after this year.
