Bama National Champions?

Previous Posts

By jay.grayauskie

With the national championship in the books it’s time to start complaining about the BSC. If LSU would have won we would have no issues, they would have beaten Bama twice, they would be undefeated, and probably the unanimous number 1 in the polls. That didn’t happen last night as Alabama won the game 21-0 and brought up so many issues.

Normally I wouldn’t see an issue with the winner of the National Championship Game being the Champion but this year was different. Alabama finished the year with one loss same as Oklahoma St. and LSU, they were 1-1 against the Tigers, and didn’t even play in their Conference Championship Game but because they won the National Championship Game they are considered the best team in the land. This system proved that even though a team didn’t play for their conference title because of 1 loss they could play for a National Title. So why can’t a team share the National Title because of one loss.

Now I know you’re thinking that every sport works that way, just because a team finishes the regular season with the best record doesn’t mean they automatically become the champions. The difference with every other sport and College Football is those sports have a playoff system and the BSC doesn’t. If College Football had a playoff system and Alabama won the whole thing that way no one would have an issue. Nobody had a problem calling the St. Louis Cardinals or Green bay Packers champions when they won as wildcard teams but there are people out there that thought Alabama didn’t deserve to even be playing for the title.

Until there is some form of a playoff then we will always be having this discussion. What’s the point of having conference title games if they don’t mean anything?  Oklahoma St. had one loss on the year, won their title game, and their reward was to sit and watch a team that didn’t even play for a conference title hoist the trophy as the best team in the land. Would have Alabama beaten Oklahoma St. if it was a playoff system in place? Maybe, but we will never know. College football has to do something, whether it’s a plus one game, a final four playoff, or a tournament we need a way to determine an undisputed National Champion.
