Coaching Staff Filling Out

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

Latest Jags news is that they plan to interview Ron Zook for an assistant coaching position. It’s actually pretty crazy how many connection he has with the Jags and this area. He came to the area as  an assistant coach at the University of Florida under Steve Spurrier. He eventually became the head coach of the Gators of three seasons. He made the jump to the NFL as an assistant in Pittsburg where he worked with Mike Mularkey. He jumped around the league a little bit before he landed the head coaching gig at Illinois. The same place where Mr. and Mrs. Khan lived and donated money too. So I guess the question I’m asking is he being considered for what he knows or who he knows?

Zook has ties to the area, the head coach, and the owner so I’m sure there is a level of comfort bring him in but is that more important than but is he a good fit to return to the NFL as an assistant? We really can’t answer that question until we know exactly what he would be coaching. The major positions have already been filled so no matter what he does he won’t have major responsibilities which if you look at it that way it’s pretty good. How many NFL teams can say they have a lower level assistant with head coaching experience at two Major D1 schools?

If you can say nothing else about this transition you have to be impressed with how quick the process is going. The quicker the coaching staff is in place the quicker they can concentrate on scouting for the draft and free agency. This whole process has to find a balance of speed and accuracy. You can’t sacrifice a good hire for the quick hire and vice versa. Only time will tell if the Jags have found that balance.
