All-Star Sunday

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

It really is an all-star Sunday this week with both the NFL and NHL all-star games being played back to back. NHL will take center stage at 4pm and the NFL will go at 7pm but is it really that big of a day. I think baseball is on the right track making the all-star game count for home field advantage in the World Series but all other all-star games are meaningless. It’s a lot like communism, it makes sense on paper but when you apply it to real life it just doesn’t work.

It seems like a no brainer, who wouldn’t want to see the very best of the best at each position play each other but no one takes the game seriously. If each player had something on the line it might make it more fun but nobody wants to get hurt or go all in and the result leaves us all feeling a little cheated at the end. All-star games have become more of a recruiting trip than anything else. Players will lobby free agents to come play with them and coaches get an up close view on guys that they may want to trade for.

I really don’t think the fans get pumped for an all-star game either. I mean you hear about Super Bowl parties or even parties for the big game during the season but when was the last time you heard of someone throwing and all-star game party? Sure the game can be fun but they could be so much better and besides what else are we going to watch this Sunday afternoon.
