That One Hurt

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

It’s a game the Jaguars and fans will need a few more days than normal to get over. Scoring a TD to take the lead with under a minute to go just to give up a last second field goal and eventually lose in overtime. The Jags started off the game great going up 10-0 but found themselves trailing with the ball at the two minute warning. Gabbert led a masterful drive throwing a TD pass to Cecil Shorts with 20 seconds to go. Ponder needed just two passes to get the Vikings in field goal range to tie the game with no time left. In OT Ponder was able to take his team down the field while Gabbert was not resulting in the 23-26 loss.

We learned a few things from the game though. Blaine Gabbert looks like an NFL starter. He went 23/29 for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns without throwing a pick. Plus he came up big when it mattered most leading a 4th quarter comeback and if the defense would have held we would be talking Gabbert all day today. We also learned it didn’t take Maurice Jones Drew long to reclaim his number 1 back position. He finished the day with 17 carries for 84 yards while Jennings only got 8 carries all day. Sure it was helped along by the Jenning injury (So much for the plan of Drew being a third down back). Even if Jennings can go next week it won’t be surprising at all if Mojo is named the starter.

Unfortunately the game was a loss and those are the ones that really hurt. I’m sure you’ll hear guys like Brian Sexton saying “it’s only one game”, “it wasn’t in the division”, “this isn’t college football”, and “one game in September won’t ruin your season” but I disagree. Ask Philly, Dallas, Tennessee, Kansas City, San Diego, and Oakland if one game doesn’t matter. All these teams finished 1 game out of a playoff spot. All these teams sat around in January thinking about that one game that got away. Can the Jags recover from this and still make the playoffs, of course but I can guarantee if the Jags miss the playoffs they will remember week 1. The game they were up 10-0 and had a lead with 20 seconds to play but still ended up losing.
