Are The Jags Better?

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

Today I want to talk a little perception vs. reality. If you follow the Jags and listen to the Jags shows on WOKV you’ve heard a lot of talk about how different the Jags will be this year. We’ve heard the game day crew really go after the national media for not giving the Jags any credit this year. We’ve heard how good the Jags looked in training camp and the preseason and how all the offseason move will improve this team. Unfortunately for the Jags and the fans it looks like the national media has been right so far.

On paper it’s obvious the Jags have improved but the way we judge a team is how they play in the regular season. In the regular season the Jags look the same if not worse than they did last year. The offense is still struggling to score touchdowns and the defense isn’t as dominate as they were last season. You can talk all you want about the offseason moves and how great guys look in practice but if it doesn’t transition onto the field does it really matter. You can blame it on the injuries or the new offense may take some time to learn. You can say it’s early and the Jags still have a bunch of games to improve but the reality is right now the Jags look like the same old Jags.

Say what you want about the Sports Illustrated poll and the ESPN poll that had the Jags winning only a couple games all year but so far they are right on. Like it or not the perception of this team locally and nationally is based on what they do doing the regular season. The reality of this year so far is been that for all the new players, new coach, and new owner the result on the field is the same. The Jags have time to turn it around and change the how this team is viewed. Maybe when the O line heals up and Gabbert and the receivers get on the same page the Jags will start winning games. It won’t take much to consider the Jags season a success. Win six games and you have improved the record from last year and the Jags still have 14 games to do it. Until then the Jags haven’t shown me enough to say they are improved this season over last.
