Back To Reality

Previous Posts

By Jay Gray

The win by the Jags this weekend was a huge step in the
right direction but now that the euphoria has worn off we need to get back to
reality. Most coaches have a 24 hour rule, win or lose you get 24 hours to
think about the last game before moving on to the next. For fans it’s easier to
do after a loss rather than a big win over a division opponent but that’s what
todays blog is about. Let’s get back to the reality of the Jags.

The win was great but the same issues still surfaced around
the team; they struggle on offense and struggle to score touchdowns. We seem to
forget about the majority of the game because two big plays dominate the
highlights and our memories. One was a 59 yard run by Maurice Jones Drew and
the game winning 80 yard TD catch by Cecil Shorts. Take away those two plays
the Jags only managed to get 194 yards for the game. Think about that nearly
half of the Jags total offense for 4 quarters came on just two plays. In all
honesty Jags got lucky this week. You’re not going to win many games having
half of your offense come on just two plays but there is something to be said
about luck. I think it was Lefty Gomez that said “I’d rather be lucky than good”
and luck can win you some games. Look at the Eagles this year they have 12
turnovers in 3 games but still have a winning record. Seattle last night had a
blown call give them a last second win and they are 2-1. The problem is luck
can only get you so far, eventually you need skill to take over and the Jag’s
offense isn’t showing much skill this season. The Jag’s offense ranks 30th
in total yards and only two teams in the entire league have scored fewer points
than the Jags.

I’m not trying to be a downer on a week when the Jags get a
win but like we hear when the Jags were 0-1 and 0-2 one game doesn’t make a
season. The reality is the Jag’s game last week was a step in the right
direction but there are a whole bunch of issues with the Jags offense. We all
want to see the Jags win games and unless they figure out a way to fix the
offense days like Sunday will be few and far in between.
