Busy From Day One

Now that Gene Smith is gone the search for a new GM is on and whoever is in charge next season they will have a big task to undertake. The Jags have one of the highest payrolls in the League and only got two wins with it. I think it’s safe to say you will see some big changes in the roster next year.

First and foremost will be what to do about Maurice Jones Drew. He will be coming off surgery and won’t be available to practice until at least May or June. Now we haven’t seen MJD practice in the offseason lately for one reason or another but he is in the last year of the contract. The new GM will have to decide to sign him long term, try to trade him assume he will leave after this year, or just play out the contract. Next on the list is dealing with guys like Daryl Smith, Josh Scobee, Greg Jones, and Brad Meester who will all become free agents this year. After those guys are taken care of the Jags will look to clean up in house salaries.  Macedes Lewis and Laurent Robinson both have large contracts and weren’t very effective on the field. Do they get deals restructured or let go all together. And don’t forget the Jags have the second overall pick that will be the cornerstone of the New GM’s tenure. One thing you don’t want to do is miss on that high of a draft pick especially if he’s the first guy you’ve ever drafted.

It’s a busy offseason which is why it’s so important to get the right guy quickly. Shad Khan will do his best in trying to find the right guy but don’t expect this process to take too long. the Jags will be on the clock before you know it but before you can think about April there is a lot of in house cleaning that needs to be done. The new GM can make or break his tenure in the first few months of his career here. Let’s hope it’s a good one.
