4/11: New spending fights looming

By Rich Jones

Another hot day, we could break the record high today.  Showers and thunderstorms mid-morning and into Tuesday afternoon will bring in cooler air, and temps back to normal, near 80 degrees.

Top National Story:  Shutdown threat over, but a new fight is emerging on two fronts. Republicans are pushing their deep spending cuts in the House, while the debate over raising the debt ceiling takes shape in both chambers.

Hear Jamie Dupree share the experience when one tea party favorite bolted past reporters after the deal was reached.

President Obama will lay out new plans Wednesday to reduce the federal deficit in part by seeking cuts to government programs for seniors and the poor.  Included is reductions in Medicare and Medicaid spending.  Listen to Jamie explain why some are questioning the President's timing for releasing this plan.

Fox News political analyst Jeff Birnbaum checked in at 8:53 to set up the next debate over raising the debt ceiling.  Hear Jeff explain why Republicans have the momentum to force deeper cuts.

Our Top Local Story:  Kids across the First Coast are preparing for a big test--the FCAT's are awaiting them in the classroom this morning. It's a critical test for 4 struggling schools on Jacksonville's northside. Raines, Ribault, Northshore K-8 and Jackson schools need to pass this round of tests, or the state's intervene plan takes effect.  McDonald's is serving free breakfast to kids who are taking the test. They can get a free egg McMuffin, milk or orange juice and a package of apple dippers.

Don't look now, but gas prices prices are soaring.  The national average is now $3.76 a gallon.  The latest Mideast tensions have helped bring oil to a 30-month high at nearly $113 a barrel in trading in Asia.

Two University of Florida basketball players are out on bond after being arrested in St. Augustine over the weekend.  Cops say 19-year-old Cody Larson and 20-year-old Erik Murphy broke into a car outside a bar early Sunday morning after it had closed.

So many questions by family and friends of an estranged Clay County couple that is now dead, following a murder/suicide Friday. Mark Herbert shot his estanged wife Julia Herbert Friday before killing himself. Julia told her friends it would end this way. She apparently received threatening text messages in the days leading up to the shootings.

A new look at the fight against terror on our soil.  The government has prevented more than 350 people suspected of ties to al-Qaida and other terrorist groups from boarding U.S.-bound commercial flights since the end of 2009.

Out-of-control wildfires in Texas scorch nearly 400 square miles and destroy dozens of homes as hot, windy
conditions fan the flames.

Strong thunderstorms sweep across Minnesota and Wisconsin, bringing strong winds, hail and reports of
tornadoes.  It comes a day after a tornado that roared through the western Iowa community of Mapleton, damaging more than half the town.

A terrifying moment in Japan, rattled by another strong aftershock. This morning's was 7.1 and promted a warning for a small tsunami.
