4/15: Wasteful spending, taxes, politics

Feeling a change in the air to start the weekend. It's breezy and more humid today, with partly sunny skies and 80 degrees in the afternoon. A shower or storm tonight, and another chance of rain tomorrow afternoon.  Sunday looks perfect, sunny and 80.

Our Top Local Story: Wasteful government spending, taxes, jobs, politics...all taking center stage in Jacksonville. And Governor Scott is deeply involved. He's campaigning with Mayoral candidate Mike Hogan, talking about jobs at Jaxport, and headlines the annual tea party rally at the Landing at 6:30pm.

A government agency with a history of running up deficits, is getting another funding boost. Governor Scott is lifting his order to hold back 30 million dollars for services to disabled people.

Supporters of high speed rail are crying foul over a high level mistake the Governor's legal team made when they decided to reject billions in federal cash. Scott's general council sent a letter to the state supreme court, admitting he grossly overstated how much money has already been spent on high speed rail.

Raked over the coals before Congress...Governor Scott admits Florida needs to do more to stop pill mills. Kentucky's Governor blames Florida for failing to regulate pain clinics.

A Jacksonville lawn man who killed an elderly woman with a hammer and could die by lethal injection. A Duval County jury recommended the death penalty for 41-year-old Cecil King for the December 2009 murder.

An electrician is killed on the northside, in front of a McDonald's. Police say nothing could have been done to save the man.

The future of Florida's public library system is in jeapordy. The state senate has approved a budget of no funding, and the house has clipped the budget by more than three million.

Our Top National Story: The next budget showdown is already underway in Washington. The House is voting today on the Republican plan to cut six billion dollars from next year's budget. The President is expected to sign the compromise deal on this year's budget that cuts 38 billion dollar budget.  Hear Jamie Dupree explain how both sides are carving out their talking points on the next budget battle.

President Obama kicked off his re-election series of speeches in Chicago, and railed against Republican budget cutting plans.  Hear Jamie Dupree's take on how the spending showdown will be one of the biggest campaign issues in 2012.

Should air traffic controllers be allowed to nap on the job? It's one of many ideas being studied by scientists, and even the FAA, following a handful of recent cases involving sleepy controllers.

Did she have a change of heart before killing her kids?  That New York mother who drove her minivan into the Hudson River, may have tried to put the van in reverse.  That's the story being told by the woman's son, who was let out of the van before the killings.

Prove it...the Arizona legislature just passed a bill that requires President Obama, and other Presidential candidates, to prove they're U-S citizens. Governor Jan Brewer is expected to sign the law, making Arizona the first state to require proof of citizenship.

The price at the pump in Hawaii will make you gulp. $4.46. Hawaii leads the nation with the highest gas price, more than a quarter higher than California.
