8/5: Market meltdown

Rich Jones

Oppresive heat again today, with the heat index around 110 this afternoon.  We have a better chance of storms this weekend.
Emily has fallen apart and is not a threat to us this weekend.  Flooding is now a big threat in Haiti, and dozens of homes are in danger of being destroyed.

We're about to hit the peak of the hurricane season, and the government forecasters expect plenty of activity.
The revised forecast calls for as many as 19 named storms before November 30th.  We've have five so far.  Forecasters say the ocean temps are exceptionally warm, and the possible redevelopment of La Nina, are helping fuel the storm activity.

Our Top Local Story:  Road rage on the Buckman Bridge at the height of rush hour.  One person was shot during a back and forth yesterday after the driver was cut off.  Backups were huge on I-295 and I-95 through Mandarin.  Cops have arrested the guy they believe is the shooter.

Shot at over a twinkie.  A guy tries to steal a twinkie from the Happy Jacks on Myrtle Avenue yesterday.  The worker chased the guy with a gun and fired a shot--it's unclear if the perp was actually shot.  A police K-9 tracked a blood trail several blocks away, but cops have not found the shoplifter.

A conviction against a Jacksonville mother in connection with the death of her 19-month-old son.  31-year-old Jeanette Ramos' son drowned in a retention pond after she let him wander near there without supervision.

A 12-year-old Clay county boy is arrested on two felony charges of animal cruelty.  Police say he used broken golf clubs, pipes, and a boxcutter to injure a total of six animals so badly, four had to be put down.  No motive has been suggested for the attacks.

Your last chance to see the Jaguars for free is tomorrow night at Everbank Field.  We'll have live coverage of the scrimmage at 7pm on WOKV.  A big question is whether we'll see David Garrard.  He injured his back and left practice yesterday.

Our Top National Story:  Today's jobs report could be an important trigger on Wall Street.  The markets took a nosedive yesterday, with the Dow finishing off more than 500 points.  Hear Jamie Dupree explain why these jobs numbers are so critical to the 2012 race for the White House.  Hear AP correspondent Warren Levinson from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, ahead of Friday's opening bell and jobs report.   WOKV's financial expert Hank Madden says there is a lot of uncertainty and it doesn't appear to be turning.

Asian stock markets are tumbling amid fears the U.S. may be heading back into recession and Europe's debt crisis is worsening.  The sell-off in Asia on Friday follows the biggest one-day decline on Wall Street since the 2008 financial crisis.

A short-term compromise on the FAA budget.  The Senate is expected to pass a House bill that would extend the FAA's operating authority through mid- September.   Hear Jamie Dupree explain why this is yet another example of kicking the can down the road.  The partial shutdown has put 4,000 workers on furlough and without paychecks.

Turns out federal health officials new more than two weeks ago that the source for a salmonella outbreak was linked to ground turkey from an Arkansas meat plant.  But they didn't issue a recall because they simply did not  have enough information.  Cargill issued one of the biggest meat recalls ever – pulling 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen turkey products off store shelves.
