Path to taxpayer savings

Previous Posts

Sunny and gorgeous weather these next few days.  Temps are in the low to mid-70's, and it's sunny and dry through the weekend.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:10 hear Fox's Rich Johnson on the ground game in Iowa and who has the edge less than three weeks before the caucus.

At 6:23 hear Mayor Alvin Brown explain how soon his reform plan will save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree make sense of the next steps in the payroll tax cut showdown.

At 7:53 hear Senator John Thrasher detail the waste he believes is in Florida's Medicaid program.

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain the mixed results for Newt Gingrich in the lastest polls ahead of tomorrow night's debate.

Our Top Local Story:  The path to save taxpayers tens of millions is taken in a surprise vote by Jacksonville lawmakers.  Maybe the Mayor was onto something when he told Jacksonville's Morning News he prays the Lord touches their hearts.  City council voted on the first part of the reform plan last night.  We'll talk to Mayor Brown at 6:23 this morning about the timeline for the next step in the reform.

The City Council delays a vote on pay raises for JEA employees. The three-percent raise for 17 hundred employees was tabled after last week's vote in the finance committee to approve the raises.  We expect a vote next month.

A big day for the future of the Jaguars, as Shad Khan's proposal to buy the team outright is voted on by NFL owners in Dallas.  Khan needs 75% of the owners to say yes.  Khan says he will elaborate on his plans for the team's future in Jacksonville after the deal is approved.  We have a standing request to Khan for an interview tomorrow morning.

A man looking for homes and cars to break into apparently picked the wrong one.  He was shot dead by a westside homeowner near Lane Avenue and Dayton Road.  Police are talking to the homeowner to determine whether the shooting was justified.

Jacksonville's Craigslist killer is sentenced to death.  It took a jury just an hour to recommend death for David Sparre, who was convicted of stabbling a Navy wife nearly 90 times last summer.  Pool was married with kids, something Sparre didn't know.  In the coming weeks we expect the judge to impose a sentence.

Our Top National Story:  Dead on arrival--a showdown over the payroll tax cut that could mean you give more to the federal government next year.  House Republicans push their plan through with the Keystone Oil Pipeline provision.  Senate Democrats call it a pointless partisan exercise.

More gridlock--this one on a budget deal that Republicans were ready to vote on in the House.  But  Democrats are refusing to move ahead with an agreement to wrap up spending work for the rest of this fiscal year until there is a deal on a payroll tax cut extension.

You Decide 2012:  Closing arguments in Iowa with less than three weeks before the first votes are cast.
WOKV's Washington Bureau Chief Jamie Dupree will be live in Iowa ahead of tomorrow night's Fox News debate.

Donald Trump is not going to moderate that debate later this month, saying there's a chance he could run as a third party candidate.  Only Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were set to participate in the debate.

The feds are calling for a nationwide ban on texting and talking while driving unless it's hands free.  And it's got you talking on Facebook.  John writes on our wall "How much more are we going to let the government decide for us".  Ron says there are already have wreckless driving laws. You don't need to micromanage the lives of citizens.  The NTSB doesn't have the power to impose a ban but is urging states to do so.

A man shoots himself aboard a JTA bus.  Police say the shooting happened as the bus was being cleared before it entered the Mayport Naval Station. It's unknown whether the shooting was intentional.  Police believe the man was trying to hide the gun from security.  We're working to find out if he's enlisted Navy, and why he was trying to carry a gun onto the base.

The operator of three Jacksonville pill mills appears in court after turning himself in to federal agents.  Zachary Rose faces three charges that could land him in prison for 20 years to life. Re ading through the indictment, we find Rose and two other people accused in the overdose death of Robert Johnson of Jacksonville.

The lawyer representing former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky should have checked before he told reporters to call 1-800-REALITY.  Turns out it's a sex line for gay and bisexual men.  The attorney says anyone who believes the allegations that university officials failed to report the sex abuse  should call 1-800-REALITY.
